IT WAS nearly 40 years ago, when Margot Fonteyn first stepped on to the stage at Covent Garden with a young male dancer from the Bolshoi, that the most magical ballet partnership of all time was created.
The man, who had defected to the West as a political refugee, was Rudolf Nureyev. His pyrotechnical dancing in that Royal Ballet production of Giselle, as well as the performance he drew from Fonteyn, astonished the audience.
At the end they took 23 curtain calls.
