Article: NEW SPECTRE OF THE WHITE DEATH.

Byline: MICHAEL HANLON

TUBERCULOSIS is once again emerging as a major threat to health in Britain.

A decade ago the deadly lung disease had been virtually eradicated following a campaign of inoculation with the drug BCG.

But now TB, of which a new drug-resistant form has developed, is killing 400 people a year in this country and the number is rising by 12 per cent each year.

Last year, 7,200 contracted drug-resistant TB, and this is likely to rise to 8,000 this year, and 10,000 by the end of 2002.

Within a decade, if the present rate of increase is maintained, thousands of people a year will be dying in Britain of TB.
