Jun. 6--Eight states in four days: It's not the summer vacation from hell, it's the typical schedule for leaders of First Union, Wachovia and SunTrust during their tense battle for shareholder votes.
Like politicians on whistle-stop, kiss-the-babies tours, the executives are jetting across the country to flash slides, statistics and smiles at portfolio managers for pension and mutual funds -- the people who control the biggest chunks of all three banks' stocks.
