PRINTING is the seventh largest industry in Britain - but also one of the least known about.

Banish images of noisy print rooms and inky printers: today's printing industry is high-tech - and demands highly skilled professionals.

More than 170,000 people are employed by about 12,000 printing companies in the UK.

Together, they generate sales of more than [pound]12.8 billion a year.

And the job title of 'printer' covers a whole range of occupations.

You could be an offset printer, working in a copy shop, or one of a team of machine minders working a giant newspaper printing press.
