DURING last year's presidential campaign, Karl Rove, George Bush's chief political adviser, went around touting the notion that the 2000 election would be a rerun of the vote of 1896. Just as William McKinley, he claimed, had ushered in an era of Republican dominance by appealing to both the power of corporate interests and the votes of the new industrial working class, so Mr Bush was supposed to combine traditional Republican business interests with the votes of new-economy workers to form a big governing majority. It didn't happen, of course. But resemblances to the politics of 100 years ago have made a surprising comeback, this time with to the events of 1912.
