Speaker Wright starts down the path to oblivion
WASHINGTON, DC
AMERICA knows how to rid itself of corrupt presidents and vice-presidents: it dumped one of each in 1973-74. But Speakers of the House of Representatives, who come third in the hierarchy of power, have not been forced from office in mid-term before. The procedure seems to be for the House to pass a resolution declaring the Speaker's chair vacant. In 1910 it almost did so against Joseph Cannon. There are now many who think it is only a matter of time before Mr Jim Wright, the present Speaker, pioneers the path to oblivion.
