Jun. 7--The Boeing Co. on Wednesday proposed a network of sophisticated satellites -- communicating directly with pilots, air traffic controllers, weather forecasters and airline operations centers -- to unsnarl the nation's air traffic mess.
The system, which could be in place within eight years, eventually would replace radar and much of the voice communications with ground-based air traffic controllers with datalinks and global positioning system data, said John Hayhurst, president of Boeing Air Traffic Management.
