A rebel army in its final hour
THE Nicaraguan contra army, exiled in its camps in Honduras, is desperately short of arms and ammunition. Its fighters, denied the money to buy more by the American Congress, are struggling to maintain their cohesion and morale. "We have to protect our integrity. We are a family," says Mr Israel Galeano, who under the name of Comandante Franklin is acting chief of the contra high command. Thirty members of his own family are in the resistance army.
The United States paid for the contras' war, and is now paying them not to fight. On April 13th Congress approved another $50m in aid, to see the rebels ...
