The Detroit Medical Center and the Wayne State University School of Medicine are fighting to retain a national childbirth research center expected to attract more than $150 million in federal funding over the next 10 years.
The DMC has housed the Perinatal Research Branch of the National Institutes of Health on a temporary basis virtually since the center's inception in the early 1990s, said John Malone Jr., M.D., chairman and chief of the DMC/WSU department of obstetrics and gynecology.
The center, which conducts research into childbirth problems, has attracted about $3 million to $4 million of federal funds annually to the academic medical campus.
