The Mariners signed their first Russian minor leaguer yesterday, getting right-handed pitcher Oleg Korneev to agree to contract terms.
Korneev, who turned 19 on May 10, is a 6-foot-7, 220-pounder from Moscow. He was pitching with the Russian National Team, which was playing against Northern League teams last month when he was scouted by the Mariners' Ken Madeja.
Korneev is the son of Leonid Korneev, described by Russian National Team manager Andrey Artamonov as the best player in Russian baseball history. The Russians took up baseball in 1987 when it became an Olympic sport. ...
