These trade groups, called guilds, were probably the original models of todays ' trade associations, now numbering over 20,000 in the US.
In the city of Brussels, there's a small gem of a public park surrounded by an ornate fence. It's something of a tourist attraction, primarily because each of the two dozen or so fence posts is topped with a different statue, representing the various trades and professions that existed in this European capital in medieval times.
