Republicans would be better off if Sen. John McCain switches to become an independent or a Democrat - and the sooner the better, several of the Arizonan's colleagues say.
But, like the Bush White House, they don't think he has any immediate incentive to quit the ranks of the Republican Party. Nor do they see any subtle way of inducing him to leave the party without appearing publicly to be shoving him out the door.
"The incentive for McCain is to stay a Republican for now, because he has more leverage that way, but he might as well leave the Republican Party because he has teamed up with so many liberal Democrats to slap the Republican Party around," ...
