Where do waves come from?

Anything that pushes against the water can make waves. Wind is the cause of most waves. Strong winds make bigger waves than gentle breezes do. Even a storm way out at sea can make huge waves that pound on the shore.
Underwater earthquakes, landslides, and volcanoes erupting on the ocean floor cause waves too. Those waves are called tsunamis (tsoo-NAH-meez). They're the biggest waves of all.
