WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced May 31 it would adjust its "butter/powder tilt" to pay more for butter while reducing its support price for nonfat dry milk.
The announcement brought immediate dismay from dairy producers. The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) said in a statement that the action "would weaken the federal safety net for U.S. dairy producers by lowering the value of the dairy price support program."
"We are very disturbed by USDA's decisions and by the narrow criteria they apparently used to reach it," said Jerry Kozak, NMPF's top official in Washington.
