SPRINGFIELD - The new, much-anticipated license plates should start turning up on cars in July, but most of Illinois' 8.5 million registered vehicles won't get updated "Land of Lincoln" tags then.
Only those motorists receiving notices that their registrations expire at the end of August or September will be able to get the new plates initially. If your registration expires at the end of July, or if you've already paid for new stickers this year, the new plates won't be available until the current tags expire next year.
