TULSA, Okla. _ One of the prime topics at a major championship at Southern Hills is the heat. It has a long history in tournaments at Tulsa.
In the 1958 U.S. Open, it was hot _ mid-90s or more _ and not all because of Tommy Bolt's temper. The tournament was labeled the "Blast Furnace Open," but Bolt, an Oklahoma native, didn't mind at all.
"That heat made Ol' Tom feel as loose as a 16-year-old," he recalled. "I couldn't wait to get out there at it."
Bolt beat Gary Player by four shots.
