The Chicagoan alto saxophonist Steve Coleman last came to Birmingham in the mid-1980s, when he made two visits as part of Dave Holland's quintet. At that time, he was a relatively unknown player but was already hard at work on formulating the abstract notions behind the music that springs from his self-proclaimed M-Base mind-set.
