MICHAEL PORTILLO today faced a withering personal attack from rival contender Ann Widdecombe as he prepared to launch his official bid for the leadership of the Conservative Party.
Only hours before the shadow chancellor was due to outline his vision of the future of the party, Miss Widdecombe publicly berated him for surrounding himself with a "little band of backbiters".
Miss Widdecombe's outburst effectively rules her out of a future frontline role in Tory politics - because Mr Portillo is now overwhelming favourite to succeed William Hague.
