As the spring soccer season comes to a close, two local clubs fielded girls teams that went to the semifinals of the Virginia State Cup.
Atlantic Soccer Club's U-14 Hot Shots made it to the semifinals, before succumbing to Chantilly Milan, 2-0.
The Hot Shots took a unique route to the semis. They chose to play the spring season in the Southeastern Virginia Youth Soccer Association, heretofore an all-boys league.
While they ended the SEVYSA season 2-6-1, the faster-paced, more physical game played with the boys helped the Hot Shots make it to the final four of the 32 best U-14 teams in the state.
