I remember the first time I read North Toward Home by Willie Morris. The book opens with his description of the kudzu covered hills that line the way from Jackson to Yazoo City up Highway 49. My parents' home is not far from the Jackson end of 49, and my dad's youngest sister lives in Yazoo City. I traveled that way many times as a child to visit her, and when I read that description of such a familiar pathway, I was flabbergasted. How could this famous writer know so well something that I knew so well? I guess my surprise stemmed from my reading so many books about places and people who seemed so far away and so different from me; I thought people who wrote books lived in ...
