Associated Press--The beer wars have come to Alabama's Capitol Hill.

A package store owner from Warrior, AL is asking the state legislature to ban stores from selling beer below cost as a way to pull in customers. Ralph Lawrence of Wayne's Package Store says private package stores can't compete with chain stores that use beer as a loss leader.

"The big people are going to put us out of business," Lawrence said

Lawrence and other owners of package stores are pushing legislation that would require businesses selling alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises to mark up their beverages at least 15 percent to cover their costs.
