House Majority Leader Rep. Neptali Gonzales II has withdrawn from the speakership race and declared unconditional support for Lakas-NUCD national chairman Pangasinan Rep. Jose de Venecia in his campaign to become speaker of the 12th Congress.
At the same time, the congressmen supporting the campaign of Lakas maverick Surigao del Norte Rep. Prospero Pichay also declared they are now backing De Venecia following a breakfast meeting Friday at his Dasmarinas, Makati City, residence.
The two developments left De Venecia with an uncontested majority of over 145 congressmen from Lakas-NUCD and its political allies in the House.
