That Summer
I was a psychology major at CCNY on the GI Bill after the war--mainly to find out why I was so screwed up. I never did find out, but being a psych major was very helpful as the goalie on the soccer team. Using sociodrama and empathy whenever I dived to stop a shot, I became Bobby Tuck of the RAF or Don Gentile of the Eighth Air Force stopping the Luftwaffe. That gave me an extra yard and I stopped shots I had no business stopping. Calling on projection when I punted the ball out of danger, I turned the ball into the head of Hitler, Tojo, Rommel, Goebbels, Goering, Unity Mitford, Ciano, Yamamoto, Gamelin, Laval, Oswald Mosely, Mussolini, or Ilsa Koch. ...
