Stereotypes of medieval French literary including the distinction begenre, romance and epic and the internal development of the latter from chanson de geste to romance in manuscript transmission, have been shown to be much more complex than previously thought.(1) Our understanding of these generic complexities is deepened by close attention to literary texts in their manuscripts, with special study of their programs of illumination and decoration, as Huot and Hindman have suggested.(2) A recent examination of the Old French epic, Aiol, known as a congener or forerunner of Chretien's Perceval, found that a program of illumination can exist in the epic and may be significant ...
