SAN JOSE, Calif. _ In a symbolic change recognizing both the economic clout of Silicon Valley and the area's growing Mexican-American population, the Mexican government has boosted the status of its San Jose consulate.
The office also has a new consul general: Marco A. Alcazar, Mexico's former ambassador to Belize. He will run an office that now enjoys the same status as the consulate in San Francisco, which used to oversee the San Jose operation.
"The status change shows the importance of the Mexican community in the area and the level of business expectations in the area," Alcazar said.
