TRENTON, N.J. _ New Jersey officials went after a small segment of the fast-growing, multibillion-dollar Internet gambling industry Monday, suing three offshore companies in an effort to stop them from doing business in the state.
The companies are accused of violating civil and criminal statutes by taking bets from New Jersey residents in a variety of casino games and professional sports contests. But state officials chose to pursue only civil actions, in part because of the difficulty of bringing in unidentified people from other countries to face trial, officials said at a news conference.
