NEW YORK-With specialty stores accounting for nearly a third of the total tabletop market share in 2000, according to HFN statistics, it appears they are filling a niche and staying alive.

Dick McGuiggan, president of market research firm Macomber Associates, contends that some specialty stores may have gained some market share last year. "Or it's probably no worse than a break-even situation," he said.

Some tabletop categories perform better at smaller independent specialty stores, such as Michael C. Fina and Ross-Simons, than in other channels of distribution.
