Al and Shirley Guzman married on a June day, like so many couples do.
Only they weren't like other couples.
Shirley clearly remembers newspaper and television reporters among their guests in the pews of a Lutheran church in Monterey Park.
She's not sure of the year, though. 1978? 1979?
Marriage records show Al and Shirley said "I do" on June 9, 1979. She was 39, he 28.
Back then, society referred to Al and Shirley as mentally retarded.
People like them, people we now call developmentally disabled, were just starting to live more independently, away from institutions. They were getting married, renting apartments, ...
