THE men and women who are, in the opinion of the editors of EBONY, the 100 Most Influential Black Americans for 1989, are shown on this and the following pages. The list evolved from numerous meetings at which several hundred persons, their work and their contributions were discussed. As in previous years, the editors had the following criteria in mind during their deliberations:
* Does the individual transcend his or her profession or position and command widespread national influence among Black people?
