A BATTALION of British troops, most probably from the Parachute Regiment, is set for deployment in Macedonia as part of a Nato force to disarm Albanian rebels.
The British contingent of up to a 1,000 soldiers could fly to Skopje over the weekend, provided a peace agreement is signed between the Macedonian government and the rebels holding out in villages along the country's northern border.
In the past 24 hours Nato has been putting together contingency plans to send a brigade of around 4,000 troops to Macedonia in a bid to prevent the country sliding into civil war.
