Head north past the mini-golf courses and bumper boats, and you'll see how things used to be. What is still left of the untouched dunes and terrain is where you might find an estimated 30 horses, swift and sturdy. Some people believe the animals may be descendants of Spanish Mustangs from centuries-old shipwrecks.
As mass development has moved north on the Currituck beaches, so too has the horses' natural habitat.
In the mid-90s, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund Inc. took the initiative to move the herds to the northernmost region of the Outer Banks.
