Unlike the endangered, native Higgins' eye mussel, the population of the exotic zebra mussel is far too high.
The first zebra mussel that was found in the Madison lakes was discovered by DNR fisheries biologist Kurt Welke while he was diving near Olbrich Park in Lake Monona this spring.
Once the first zebra mussel was found in Lake Monona, Welke and other divers dove in the Olbrich, Olin and Hudson park areas of Lake Monona in May to search for further evidence of zebra mussels.
