The Columbia River is more than just the lifeblood for the Pacific Northwest's electricity, recreation, transportation, irrigation and fish habitat.
Former Oregon Sen. Mark O. Hatfield said so.
The river is also a source for attention to social issues, Hatfield said.
In his presentation at the Northwest Forum on Preserving the Benefits of the Columbia River, March 12 in Wilsonville, Ore., Hatfield said the Columbia River system was built as a "vehicle for profound social change." He said the Northwest energy system has worked for more than 70 years, but it is still in its infancy stages.
