In a recent speech given in Britain on the English occupation of the northern six counties of Ireland, Derry's Sinn Fein City Councillor Mitchel McLaughlin stated: "I have found, particularly when I talk to British socialists, a certain myopia, a certain blindspot in relation to Ireland and the historical role of Britain's involvement in Ireland." Unfortunately this blind spot has not been limited to the British Left. In the United States, understanding and support for the Irish national liberation movement has been inconsistent at best. Though a solidarity movement exists among Irish-Americans, this movement is not of the Left, and tends to be hostile to the Left.
