CARACAS -- Venezuela's close ties with Cuba, the brainchild of President Hugo Chavez, increasingly are becoming a political and financial liability for the Venezuelan leader.

Cuban leader Fidel Castro welcomed Chavez as a hero after his release from prison in 1994 after he had served time for his failed 1992 coup attempt. Since then, the two men have met frequently and people close to the Venezuela leader say Chavez views Castro as a mentor.
