State oil refining company Naftec, in conjunction with the Energy & Mines Ministry, has issued an international tender for the rehabilitation and restart of operations at the In Amenas refinery in the south of the country.

The refinery, which has a capacity of 7,500 barrels a day (bid), came on stream in 1980 producing gasoline, gas oil and kerosene. However, ground subsidence disturbed the civil works and caused problems to the pipeline, and the plant was closed in 1986. "The equipment is still in excellent working order," says a Naftec official. "There will be no problems for the investor once they have found a solution to stabilise the soil."
