Master John Meyer of Virginia reeled off five straight wins before settling for a final-round draw and clear first place in last weekend's George Washington Open, played at the Best Western/Mount Vernon Hotel in Alexandria. IM Larry Kaufman and masters Ilye Figler, Oladapo Adu and Floyd Boudreaux tied for second, all at 5-1. Top seed Kaufman did not lose a game but was held to draws by Boudreaux and master Vladimir Grechikin to keep him out of the winner's circle. Meyer's tough Round 5 win over Figler - a game in which he appeared to be worse for much of the contest - was critical to the outcome of the tournament, which attracted a record 93 players.
