ADOLF HITLER'S invasion of the Soviet Union, code-named Operation Barbarossa, began 60 years yesterday, and launched the mightiest land battle ever fought by mankind.
Between 1941 and 1945, it produced a level of destruction throughout Central and Eastern Europe never before experienced in human history.
By the end of the fighting, 28 million Russians had died, the equivalent of 19,000 men, women and children for each of the 1,418 days of the war.
