No matter how you look at the situation of caring for the elderly, it is not a very pretty picture--for taxpayers, the elderly, their families, nursing-home administrators and even those in their foodservice departments. And the problems will not go away.
Everyone knows the baby boomers are growing old and the cost of health care is going up. A bleak situation, already exacerbated by a labor shortage--most pronounced in the nursing profession--was made even worse following the implementation of DRGs.
Put into place six years ago, DRGs provide government reimbursement at specific levels for specific procedures. ...
