The first study to examine whether long-term weight loss benefits people with type 2 diabetes is being launched Monday at 16 sites around the country _ including Miriam Hospital in Providence, which is also home base of the study's co-director, Rena R. Wing.
Funded with $180 million from the National Institutes of Health, the study is the largest examination of weight loss, with plans to enroll 5,000 people, including 315 from Rhode Island, for up to 12 years.
It might serve to measure the long-term effectiveness of a weight-loss strategy that combines a lot of exercise, calorie reduction and emotional support. Most studies of weight loss last about 18 ...
