Through disaster, boom and bust, remote Kodiak, Alaska, has inspired a fierce loyalty in its tenacious residents.

According to the island's comprehensive conservation plan, only six species of land mammal "occurred naturally" on Kodiak, including its namesake bear.

About 3,000 Kodiak bears dwell in the 3,500-square-mile archipelago. They are said to be carnivorous, but fortunately prefer salmon to humans.

The Aluttiiq, who are said to be closely related to the Yupik Eskimos who live along the Bering Sea, have been on the island for 7,500 years, long enough to give them native, if not naturally occurring, status.
