A THIN, PIERCING wail rose in the sludgy summer air.
EEEeeeeEEEeeeEEEE. . .
It cut through the drone of insects in the overgrown fields. It drowned out the rumbling of a tractor down Va. 623.
This sound had probably never been heard before on the porch of the clapboard general store that houses Ware Neck Post Office, just a couple of miles outside Gloucester.
It was kind of like the background of those old tapes of the Beatles at Shea Stadium.
The squealing became a name: TOM! Tom! TOM!
