Article: WOMEN SWOON, CROWDS GATHER, TOM CRUISE AND STEVEN SPIELBERG ARE IN TOWN, AND GLOUCESTER IS STAR-STRUCK.(DAILY BREAK)

Byline: ROBERTA T. VOWELL THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT

A THIN, PIERCING wail rose in the sludgy summer air.

EEEeeeeEEEeeeEEEE. . .

It cut through the drone of insects in the overgrown fields. It drowned out the rumbling of a tractor down Va. 623.

This sound had probably never been heard before on the porch of the clapboard general store that houses Ware Neck Post Office, just a couple of miles outside Gloucester.

It was kind of like the background of those old tapes of the Beatles at Shea Stadium.

The squealing became a name: TOM! Tom! TOM!
