The War of 1812 was a crucial point in global recognition of the United States of America. It was fought as a result of both France and England seizing American ships and pressing American sailors into service, which was contrary to international law. James Madison, as Secretary of State under President Thomas Jefferson, protested this practice to both countries, but with no effect.
