Mary Frances Berry, chairwoman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, suggested that the Justice Department probe the extensive voting problems in last year's presidential election and noted she would seek approval from Attorney General John Ashcroft to examine problems in Florida.

Reporting on the findings of the Civil Rights Commission's month-long study of the November 2000 presidential election, Berry, during a press conference in Washington, D.C., said, "We are asking that the Justice Department and Mr. Ashcroft look at the facts in our report and look at the remedy he should pursue.
