A first-ever attempt to sedate an entangled right whale and free it from fishing line failed yesterday, and rescuers were considering last night whether to try again to help the ailing leviathan.
"There was no change in behavior at all," National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration spokeswoman Teri Frady said about the apparent lack of effect of two sedative doses.
The whale, known as 1102, may be beyond help.
"The prognosis for this animal has never been good," Peter Borelli of the Center for Coastal Studies told reporters yesterday. "Based on today's actions, I'd say that they're less good."
