A STIRRINGLY HEROIC SIR IAN McKELLEN was part of the biggest splash at this year's quiet Cannes Film Festival, as Lord of the Rings--the 25 minutes of it screened by New Line Cinema--was the hottest ticket in town. (The openly gay knight was featured in a tense action scene as Gandalf, while Elijah Wood's Frodo looked delectable.) It also had the most lavish party--at the Chateau Castellaras (inset)--and the most crowded press interviews, and it even inspired the worst puns in the trades, such as "Be a Frodo; be very a Frodo."
Otherwise, the 54th edition of Cannes seemed a retro year for queers: We were everywhere, but mostly on the fringes. A "pansy dry cleaner" ...
