An outbreak of sea lice in British Columbia's fish farms is threatening millions of pink salmon on Canada's West Coast unless steps are taken quickly to stop the infestation, Aboriginal fishermen said Thursday.
Pat Alfred of the Kwakiuti Territorial Fisheries Commission said the infestation was first noticed about one month ago and it still may not be too late to contain it.
Sea lice are tiny marine parasites similar to those that infest land animals. They attach themselves to pink salmon, sucking the blood and causing lesions that leave the fish vulnerable to bacteria.
