To minimize the risk of acute rejection during the first months after transplantation it is common practice in most transplant centers to use a combination of immunosuppressive agents. In the longer term, however, increasing emphasis is placed on dose reduction or withdrawal of adjunctive immunosuppressants, with the aim to reduce the risks of over-immunosuppression and the number of side effects of therapy.
