Engineered Support Systems, Inc. (ESS) recently announced it has completed a four-year development project for the first refrigerated ship stores (RSS) system with its recent delivery of a prototype to Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA.
The company said its self-contained refrigeration system was developed for the USS Virginia class submarine -- the latest generation of U.S. Navy nuclear attack submarines -- under a $1.5-million cost-plus fixed fee subcontract with General Dynamics Electric Boat. Based upon current requirements, the Navy has a projected long-term need for 30 RSS production units as its fleet of nuclear submarines is constructed.
