St. John's wort proved ineffective in patients with major depression in the first large-scale, randomized, placebo-controlled U.S. trial of the herbal supplement.
Patients with major depression should not be treated with St. John's wort, given the availability of other proven effective treatments, said lead researcher Dr. Richard Shelton. Despite earlier evidence of a beneficial effect, the new findings suggest that it is unlikely that St. John's wort will be shown effective in patients with at least moderately severe depression, he added.
